The church in Fontenay was built between 1139 and 1147, and is a perfect example of a Romanesque Cistercian church. It is the oldest Cistercian church in France, and was dedicated by Pope Eugene III in 1147. Built like a basilica, in a latin cross style, it has a nave with 2 aisles, a transept, and a flat chevet. Following Saint Bernard's orders, the bays are very deep so that nothing can distract the view.
